Pyongyang's cybercriminal operations are reportedly fueled by restricted Nvidia GPUs, including GeForce RTX 2700 models, despite export controls. The regime's AI research—focused on pattern recognition and data optimization since the 1990s—has recently expanded to facial recognition and accent identification, raising concerns about its potential to automate crypto theft, money laundering, and fake identity schemes.

Kim Min Jung of South Korea's INSS warns that North Korea's AI advancements could escalate its cybercrime capabilities. The regime has yet to deploy high-end models but continues to exploit hardware like Nvidia's banned chips, underscoring the need for tighter technology diversion controls.
